After more than 20 years as a Washington, DC, attorney I decided to pursue my goal to paint.
From 2003 to 2007 I attended the Corcoran School of Art. I now paint full-time. While some aspects of my law practice allowed for creative thought, I didn’t relish the adversarial elements. Painting, in contrast, is freeing. I feel in control of my environment – free to play with color, form and line. I can paint for hours with no pressure, no rigidity and no conflict.
I like to experiment with depth, color, transparency and opaqueness. Life is complicated and, in a very abstract sense, I am reflecting on all the intricacies of interrelationships, problems, confrontations – the components of everyday existence.
My work rarely involves discernible objects. Rather, I explore the interplay among geometric shapes. By combining transparency and opaqueness, I strive for a balance of subtlety and strength. It’s what I seek in my own life and, while I don’t always achieve it, I think it’s a worthy goal.
